Systemcenter Project 21623
The Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant plays a critical role in protecting public health, supporting wastewater treatment operations, and helping preserve Oʻahu’s shoreline and marine environments for communities stretching from Halawa to Makakilo. As part of the City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services’ long-term wastewater infrastructure improvements, the new support campus was developed to help accommodate the operational demands tied to one of the island’s most essential municipal utility systems.
Working alongside Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Systemcenter furnished and coordinated office furniture, workplace furniture, operational environments, and industrial storage solutions across the Administration, Laboratory, Central Shops, and Storeroom facilities supporting the approximately 10-acre treatment plant expansion. Beginning in 2021, the multi-year project required extensive coordination surrounding evolving building conditions, infrastructure integration, operational planning, vendor coordination, and phased installation scheduling throughout construction.
Furniture & Storage Supporting Critical Infrastructure Operations
Designed to support the teams responsible for maintaining daily wastewater treatment operations, the new facilities help accommodate administration, laboratory testing, equipment coordination, facility maintenance, operational oversight, and long-term storage supporting the plant’s environmental and infrastructure goals.
From the beginning, the project team prioritized standardized workstation environments capable of supporting the operational needs of multiple departments while efficiently accommodating full staff capacity across the campus. Durable material selections, including laminate workstation finishes in high-traffic areas, were intentionally chosen to help reduce long-term wear, maintenance concerns, and material deterioration often seen over time in heavily used government facilities.
To support the operational needs across multiple departments, Systemcenter coordinated a wide range of office furniture, workplace furniture, and industrial storage systems throughout the campus, including:
- Haworth Compose workstations
- Masters Series private offices
- Planes conference tables
- Very, Maari, and Soji ergonomic seating
- BeHold storage systems
- Global Furniture lounge furniture
- Ratana outdoor furniture
- Winsted operational monitoring stations used by facility teams to oversee daily wastewater treatment operations and system coordination
- NuCore RackStore industrial pallet racking systems supporting the organized storage of maintenance equipment, operational materials, facility supplies, repair components, and warehouse inventory throughout the campus
From administrative office spaces and conference rooms to operational support environments and warehouse storage areas, the project required durable furniture and storage solutions capable of supporting high daily use, evolving operational demands, and long-term workplace flexibility across multiple buildings.
Coordinating a Complex Multi-Building Infrastructure Project
Large-scale infrastructure projects require continuous coordination between contractors, project teams, vendors, and facility stakeholders throughout every phase of construction. As building conditions, operational requirements, and infrastructure coordination evolved over time, Systemcenter worked closely with project partners to coordinate workstation layouts, storage planning, power integration, furniture specifications, and installation scheduling across all four facilities.
The scale and complexity of the project required adaptable planning and ongoing collaboration to help support both construction progress and long-term operational functionality for the Department of Environmental Services teams working within the space each day.
By combining adaptability, communication, and long-term planning, Systemcenter helped deliver workplace furniture, operational support environments, and industrial storage systems designed to support the ongoing needs of the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant and the communities that rely on this critical public infrastructure system.
