Furnishing New Military Barracks at Camp Hansen

As part of ongoing efforts to modernize military housing in Okinawa, three new six-story barracks were constructed at Camp Hansen to house more than 1,000 Marines and sailors. The new facilities replace six older buildings and are part of a broader investment in updated living quarters and infrastructure for service members stationed in Japan.

Systemcenter supported the project with the procurement, logistics and installation of more than 1,100 sets of military barracks furniture, divided across the three newly constructed buildings.

While the furniture specifications were established by the Defense Policy Review Initiative (DPRI), Systemcenter was responsible for taking the project from order placement through final installation, coordinating manufacturers, international freight, delivery schedules, staging and installation inside an active military installation.

More Than 1,100 Sets of Military Barracks Furniture

The project included a combination of barracks room, common-area and office furniture, with New England Woodcraft providing the primary furniture package for the individual living quarters.

The new barracks were designed around individual bedrooms connected to shared bathrooms and kitchenettes, providing Marines and sailors with more personal living space. Each building also includes common areas and other amenities designed to support daily life on base.

With more than 1,100 furniture sets required across three buildings, successful execution depended on carefully coordinating procurement, international logistics and installation with the construction schedule.

Planning Around a Complex Construction Schedule

Furniture production, international shipping and installation all had to align closely with construction progress and final building turnover.

Shipping too early would create significant storage requirements in Japan, while delays could impact the installation schedule. The team also had to account for limited storage time at the port once containers arrived in Okinawa.

Systemcenter worked closely with manufacturers, shipping partners and the end user to coordinate a just-in-time delivery strategy that kept furniture moving as the buildings became ready to receive it.

Coordinating 62 Containers to Okinawa

Once final walkthroughs were completed and the buildings were turned over to the U.S. government, the logistics plan moved into action.

The military barracks furniture was shipped to Okinawa in 62 40-foot containers over approximately two months, with containers arriving on site in carefully coordinated phases.

Container schedules had to be closely managed because shipments had limited free storage time at the port before additional charges could be incurred. Systemcenter coordinated the flow of containers with progress in the field so furniture arrived as the buildings were ready to receive it.

As containers arrived, furniture was offloaded and staged on the ground floor, allowing installation to progress systematically from the upper floors down.

Executing Installation Across Three Barracks Buildings

With furniture arriving throughout the project, installation had to move in close coordination with the delivery schedule. Over approximately 2.5 months, Systemcenter managed the installation across all three newly constructed barracks buildings.

Access to the active military base required advance coordination to keep deliveries and installation moving throughout the project. Furniture was staged and installed in sequence as each area became ready, helping the team manage the large volume of product moving through the site.

In addition to more than 1,100 sets of barracks furniture, the project included common-area and office furniture, along with the installation of owner-provided appliances and draperies.

Careful sequencing between deliveries, staging and installation allowed the team to keep furniture moving efficiently from container to its final location throughout the three buildings.
