Systemcenter Project 33725
At Leilehua High School, the ALPSS program within Hawaiʻi’s Department of Education supports students through personalized, student-centered learning pathways. These classrooms are designed to honor the fact that every learner engages differently, bringing unique strengths, preferences, and ways of participating into the educational environment.
Systemcenter partnered with the school to furnish an ALPSS classroom that moves beyond a traditional layout, creating a flexible and welcoming space using thoughtfully selected education furniture and classroom furniture that support a wide range of learning styles, daily activities, and individual expression.
Education Furniture Designed to Support Flexibility, Comfort, and Daily Flow
This classroom serves a small group of students throughout the day and supports a variety of experiences including guided instruction, collaborative learning, independent focus, and moments of quiet reflection. The space also needed the ability to open up fully for special activities, reinforcing the importance of adaptable classroom furniture and ease of movement.
The primary goal was to design an education environment that responds to students in real time, offering options in how they engage with both the space and their work, while giving educators the flexibility to adjust the classroom furniture to support different moments of the day.
Classroom Furniture Solutions Shaped by Real Classroom Experience
Systemcenter met directly with Leilehua’s education specialists to understand how the classroom functions, how students interact with the space, and what types of education furniture best support engagement and comfort. From there, the team shared examples of similar learning spaces and collaborated on selecting classroom furniture solutions that could be separated, grouped, and rearranged with ease.
This consultative approach ensured the final classroom environment reflected the lived experience of the space and supported both connection and independence in meaningful ways.
Creating Supportive Learning Zones with Furniture that Encourages Choice
Within a limited classroom footprint, Systemcenter developed multiple zones using flexible classroom furniture that encourage different types of engagement. The layout supports collaboration, independent focus, and fluid groupings while allowing the room to shift smoothly throughout the day.
Tiered seating introduces a range of comfortable postures and informal gathering opportunities, while surrounding areas offer standard-height seating, stools, relaxed lounge options, and standing-height tables. Together, these education furniture solutions give students the freedom to choose where and how they work, fostering a sense of ownership and comfort within the classroom.
Classroom Design that Grows with its Learners
Every element in this ALPSS classroom was selected to empower students and educators alike. The classroom furniture can be easily rearranged, encouraging students to participate in shaping their environment and allowing the space to evolve alongside different activities and rhythms of the day.
The result is a learning environment that feels warm, flexible, and intentional. It reflects a commitment to creating classrooms where students feel supported, valued, and engaged, and where education furniture becomes an active partner in the learning experience.
