Project # 27492 – UHM Travel Industry Management – George Hall 201

Systemcenter Project # 27492

In the heart of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, a transformation was underway at George Hall. The Shidler College of Business – School of Travel Industry Management (TIM) had a vision for a multi-purpose flex space that would serve as a hub for students, events, and teleconferencing. The challenge was presented to us: create a space that was modern, flexible, and functional, while still maintaining the character of the historic building.

From the very beginning, we knew this project was special. It started when Lloyd Tsukano, Shidler NET Lab Manager, reached out to us and introduced Dr. John Crotts, Director of the TIM School. They were seeking out ideas to renovate a space at George Hall. The current space was outdated and lacked accessibility to power, making it a less-than-ideal environment for students and events. Our goal was to provide updated furniture that would not only meet their functional needs but also add a touch of modern elegance to the room.

The bidding process was very competitive. Our presentation stood out by combining traditional foam core boards that served as a leave behind with a captivating PowerPoint presentation displayed on their video wall. We showcased several options for the space by bringing finish samples along. We engaged the clients in the selection process to understand their preferences and ensure the final design matched their vision.

The challenge of providing ample seating within a limited budget pushed us to think creatively. By combining products from KI and Haworth, we were able to create a harmonious blend of functionality and style. We strived to strike a balance between a fresh, updated look and the old-school charm of the room’s arched windows and wood accents.

As the project came to life, the transformation was nothing short of breathtaking. The once old and outdated space had been reborn into a vibrant, flexible, and inviting environment for students and events alike. UH Manoa’s School of Travel Industry Management now had a space that not only met their needs, but exceeded their expectations, thanks to a successful collaboration between our team and the visionaries at the TIM School.
