Military gathering spaces are more than just places to eat—they’re essential to morale, connection, and the well-being of those who serve. With that in mind, Systemcenter’s renovation and expansion of The Anderson Hall Dining Facility transformed a once plain, institutional cafeteria into a vibrant and welcoming environment. By expanding seating capacity and modernizing the design, the facility now offers Marines a place to relax, connect, and feel at home while recharging over a meal.

Designed for Those Who Serve

This dining facility serves the Marines stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base as their daily cafeteria and a refuge from the demands of service. It’s a space where they gather to share meals, unwind, and build camaraderie. Understanding the importance of comfort and community, the design focused on creating a setting that encourages Marines to relax and enjoy moments of connection outside of their duties.

Our Approach

Systemcenter entered this project through a unique cross-regional collaboration with our Asia team, who was simultaneously working on similar dining facilities upgrades in Japan. This connection allowed us to share insights and best practices that informed the design for Kaneohe. Given creative freedom by the client, we took a consultative approach—introducing vibrant colors, natural elements like plants and artwork, and practical design details such as fabric screens that divide space while absorbing sound. Rounded table corners enhanced safety and comfort, creating a space thoughtfully designed for the people who use it every day.

We also navigated challenges including funding delays and tight installation schedules on an active base. Our operations team carefully coordinated shipments and installation timing to avoid disruptions during meal service, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal impact on the Marines’ daily routine.
