From Library to Learning Center: Inside Nānāikapono’s Transformation
Nānāikapono Elementary School is a Hawaiian-focused public charter school serving West Oʻahu. When the school set out to reimagine its traditional elementary library, the goal was clear: create a modern, flexible Learning Center designed to support the evolving ways students learn, collaborate, and create. Rooted in cultural connection and student growth, the school’s approach to education emphasizes adaptability, engagement, and community values now reflected throughout the space itself.

Systemcenter partnered with the school to transform the former library into a dynamic learning environment used throughout the day by multiple groups with different needs. The Learning Center now supports everything from staff meetings and presentations to student collaboration, independent study, research, and creative learning activities. Rather than centering the room around bookshelves and fixed layouts, the vision focused on creating a space where students and educators could move fluidly between focused work, group discussions, and hands-on learning experiences.

A Learning Center Built for Group Projects, Quiet Focus, and Everything In Between
The School’s principal came to the project with a strong vision already in place. She identified key zones for collaboration, independent work, lounge seating, presentations, and innovation-based learning, but needed support translating those ideas into a cohesive environment within the existing footprint. Systemcenter worked closely with the school to define each zone through flexible education furniture solutions, layouts, and applications that created separation without making the space feel closed off.

KI’s education-focused furniture paired with Haworth freestanding screens established purposeful learning zones while still allowing the environment to remain open, welcoming, and easy to reconfigure throughout the day. The result is a learning space that adapts alongside students, staff, and changing classroom needs without sacrificing comfort, functionality, or flow.

A Fast-Tracked Vision for Modern Learning
The project also came with an incredibly tight timeline. Shortly after the initial site visit, the school faced a funding deadline that required a purchase order submission within days in order to secure the budget. Working collaboratively across teams, Systemcenter quickly developed a solution that aligned furniture selections to each learning zone, stayed within budget, and allowed the school to move forward before funding expired.

While layouts and finishes were refined later through live design sessions, the ability to move quickly ensured the opportunity and the momentum behind the project stayed intact. Coordination across operations also allowed the school to begin utilizing portions of the space as products arrived in phases, helping the campus stay prepared for upcoming activities and events.
